Maxine Lucille Gray
Aug. 23, 1927 - Oct. 23, 2020
Maxine was born in Portland, Oregon to Mary and Valerian Rose, attending Gregory Heights Grade School, Grant High School, Oregon State and Portland State Universities graduating with a BA Education. She was married to Robert H. Gray on August 1, 1948 and is survived by her four children, Lesley Sutter (David, dec.), Lori Vranizan (Edward), Layne Gray, and Robert H. Gray Jr (Maria), ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Maxine was a lifelong learner and a beloved third grade teacher in the Reynolds School District. She lived her creed, and never missed the opportunity to remind all near her that the “creative and intelligent are never bored”. She was a member of the PEO sisterhood for 35 years, ceaselessly supporting women’s education. Maxine’s interest in art took her all over the world visiting galleries and learning from various cultures, however she always returned to her favorite local destination, Cannon Beach, Oregon. There Maxine immersed herself in family, gathered to enjoy the summers, walking to Haystack Rock, singing the Alphabet song backwards, playing spoons, and eating lasagna. Maxine loved her family dearly. She was always available to help, having the innate ability to recognize when any of her children or grandchildren needed it whether requested or not.
Maxine and Bob retired to Napa, CA where she volunteered as a docent at the local art museums, returning to Portland in 2003 after Bob’s passing as a resident of Holladay Park Plaza. She was at the center of social and educational activities, played bridge and delighted at entertaining in the dining room.
Late in her life Maxine participated in a neurological study of the human brain to advance the knowledge of Alzheimer’s. She continues to give and educate even post mortem. It is her request that any donations be made to Oregon Health and Science University Foundation whose slogan is “this will help fuel our research and work-so we can make discoveries faster, save more lives and give hope to millions.”
She will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched.
A private committal service at Willamette National Cemetery will take place on November 13th at 2:30PM. Please contact Lori Vranizan, lorivranizan@me.com if you wish to attend.
