- [S740] Obituary of Anne SLAVIK, (Name: Edmonton Journal; Location: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; Date: 23 Apr 2010;).
SLAVIK, Anne (nee Streit) Was born on May 20, 1918 in Viking Alberta, where she lived for over eighty years. After graduating from Westlock teacher's college, she taught in rural one room schools around Viking. She married Vince Slavik three weeks before his departure to fight in World War II. When Vince returned, they resumed their married life, acquired a business and built a home in Viking. Jerome was born in 1948 and Monica in 1951. From 1948 to 1964, Anne and Vince co-owned (with Adolf Streit) and operated the Viking Meat Market. Following Vince's illness, Anne returned (at age 45) to university and graduated as a librarian (U of A '66). She established the first library in the Viking School. Anne was a talented musician and for decades was the organist and choir leader for the Catholic Church. Following decades of disability and illness, during which he was cared for with devotion by Anne, Vince died in 1998. In 2002, Anne moved to Edmonton to be near her children and grandchildren and acquired many friends at St. Andrew's Senior Facility. Anne passed away quietly in her sleep on April 20, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Southgate Care Center at the age of 92. Anne will be remembered as a hardworking, courageous and devoted wife, loving and concerned mother and grandmother, and a devout Catholic. Her integrity, kindness and compassion were respected, admired and loved by her many friends and acquaintances. Jerome, his wife Holly, Monica, Brian and grandchildren Kimberly, Scott, Jay, Daniel and Alayne and great-grandchildren Kaydin and Daxon are comforted that at last their beloved mother and grandmother will find the peace, joy and rest she so richly deserves. The family extends its sincere thanks to Anne's wonderful caregivers at the Good Samaritan Southgate care centre. In lieu of flowers, donations to Christian charities serving the poor, would be appreciated. Funeral mass will be held at Viking Catholic Church on Sunday, April 25, 2010 at 2:30 p.m.
