    8. [S55] ROSE, Donald Allan, Email of 11 Jul 2008.
This morning at 06:00 my uncle Ernie George Rose passed away in North Vancouver at the age of 92.
      OBITUARY

      Ernie G. Rose

Pioneer - Member of Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, passed away on the 11th of July 2008 at the age of 92.

Pre deceased by Jean, his wife of 53 years. Survived by his adopted daughter Carole Vassey, along with her extended family, his sisters Anna McDonald of Nanaimo, Georgina Bennett of Lewiston, Idaho, many Nieces, Nephews and a host of caring friends, neighbours and last but not least his four legged companion Tiger, a Yorkshire Terrier.

Ernie was born, raised and educated in Killam, Alberta. Being very close to his father and enjoyed working with him at his many hobbies, the one that fascinated him most was ham radio, when he started broadcasting at age 12.

After graduating from high school, he journeyed to Vancouver to get his commercial broadcast licence, with a view to gain employment as a radio officer aboard a passenger liner which plied out of Vancouver. With licence in hand and no ship jobs available, Ernie gained employment with radio station CKMO as a technician, announcer and disk jockey. After two years he was promoted to Chief Engineer, a position he held until resigning to accept employment with CBC Radio station in 1940. Being a perfectionist, Ernie achieved the position as senior technician/engineer and prepared himself for the onslaught of television. In 1953 when CBC was planning to install local television in Vancouver, Ernie transferred from radio to television engineering. After a short course at CBC television-Toronto, Ernie returned to Vancouver and supervised and maintained the installation of Vancouver?s first Television Studio. A year later he was promoted to Assistant Technical Director, a position which he held until 1960 when he resigned to accept the position of Chief Engineer and Vice President of Engineering at CHAN TV, Vancouver?s first private television station. For the next twenty years Ernie had the busiest period of his life, earning many awards, which include Broadcaster of the Year award BCAB, Canadian Association Broadcasters (CAB), Keith Rogers award for excellence in Engineering, WAB Lifetime membership award, R. Lamb honours award, CAB Broadcaster of the Year award, and last but not least the very prestigious induction into the CAB Hall of Fame. With his usual persistence before retirement it was Ernie?s desire to have BCTV be the first Canadian private station transmitting its program service on satellite. With this accomplished in 1981, at the age of sixty five, Ernie retired from BCTV and set up his own private consulting company so that he could keep his hand in the industry.

It was his wish to be cremated and have a private family internment.
