Adams, Wayne Herbert
December 27, 1919 - February 18, 2011
At 91 Wayne Adams transitioned from life the same way he lived it...with a quiet dignity and surrounded by people that loved him.
Fourth generation American, Wayne was born the youngest of eight children in Maora, IL.
As a youth he was known for his strong athletic abilities, and as a teenager he set out to pursue his life's passion to be a major league baseball pitcher.
Wayne's baseball career was on the rise when he was asked to play on the farm team in preparation for the St. Louis Cardinals and named "Most Promising Rookie of the Year".
In 1942 Wayne discovered yet another passion. He was a patriot. He enlisted in the US Army Air Force and served until December 1945. Continuing to hone his baseball skills Wayne pitched for a military league while he served his country as a radio mechanic on transit aircraft.
While stationed in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Wayne met and married the love of his life, a feisty Polish Canadian beauty, Tillie Halwa. They had one daughter, Beverly.
After his discharge from the military Wayne's dream of a career in baseball ended as the result of an inoperable shoulder injury.
Wayne and his small family moved to South Bend, Indiana where he worked with Philco Radio and the Studebaker Company. In 1954 he relocated the family to Burbank, CA and worked with Sterer Engineering until he retired at age 75.
Wayne was viewed by everyone that knew him as a low - key, loving and gentle man with solid values...loyal to his family and friends.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 66 years, Tillie; his daughter, Beverly; three grandchildren, Elan, David & Eden; and seven great grandchildren, London, Ariel, Skye, Mycca, Isabela, Olivia and Tyler. He is pre-deceased by his granddaughter, Catya.
Because of his love of family, country and baseball, Wayne Adams will be remembered as an "all American man."
Donations can be made to honor Wayne's memory to the American Red Cross.
