Commissioned as the troopship Edmund B. Alexander in 1941. Reconditioned in 1942 and a large single funnel replaced the original two. Scrapped at Baltimore in 1957. Ex-Amerika (1917).

The BRAUNSCHWEIG was built by R.Steele & Co, Greenock, Scotland in 1873 for Norddeutscher Lloyd [North German Lloyd]. She was a 3079 gross ton ship, length 351.3ft x beam 39.1ft, one funnel, two masts, iron construction, single screw and a speed of 12 knots. There was accommodation for 34-1st, 33-2nd and 600-3rd class passengers. Launched on 1/4/1873, she sailed from Bremen on her maiden voyage to Southampton and Baltimore on 9/9/1873. On 16/10/1880 she commenced sailing from Bremen to New York and after completing four round voyages on this service, was transferred on 13/1/1887 to the Bremen - Suez Canal - Far East run. On 13/1/1894, she resumed the Bremen - New York service and after eleven voyages, the last commencing 14/1/1896, continued on the Naples - New York run but on 30/5/1896, she commenced her last voyage and was scrapped the same year. "The 'Chemnitz' was built by J.C.Tecklenborg at Geestemunde for Norddeutscher Lloyd [North German Lloyd] in 1901. She was a 7542 gross ton vessel, length 428.2ft x beam 54.3ft, one funnel, two masts, twin screw and a speed of 13 knots. There was accommodation for 129-2nd class and 1,935-3rd class passengers. Launched on 27.11.1901. She left Bremen on her maiden voyage to Baltimore on 21.3.1902. She made her first run from Bremen to New York and Galveston on 30.11.1902, and from Bremen to Philadelphia and Baltimore on 1.12.1910. On 11.6.1914 she left Bremen on her last voyage to New York, Philadelphia and Galveston and was then laid up in Bremen in August 1914 for the duration of the war. In 1919, she was surrendered to Britain and was scrapped in Holland in 1923."

Amphion began its life as a passenger liner in Geestemunde, Germany in 1899. When World War I broke out in 1914, Köln was interned by the United States government. Later, in 1917 when the United States entered the war, Köln was seized and used as a troop transport, dubbed the Amphion, by the US Army to move its expeditionary force to France.

History: Maiden voyage: Bremen-Southampton-New York, August 6, 1907. She never won the Atlantic speed record for those phenomenal liners the Lusitania and the Mauretania were put in service and won the Blue Ribbon before the German steamship had any opportunity to try and annex it. Vessel was seized by the United States in 1917. Torpedoed while being employed as the American troopship Mount Vernon, September 5, 1918. Managed to make port, but the lives of 36 were lost when it became necessary to close the water tight bulkheads of the engine room. Laid up after the war. Scrapped in 1940. Running mates: Kaiser Wilhelm II (identical), Kronprinz Wilhelm and Kaiser der Grosse.
